The latest Garage Studio projects: Hossam Ramzy, Woody Woodmansey, BA Robertson, Jeevan Anandasivam and more

I have just finished the project for Universal with Hossam Ramzy and Jeevan Anandasivam. The project is called 'East West Beats' and will be released shortly. We are all very excited about it!

I have also just finished the first stage of an album project with ledgendary drummer Woody Woodmansey and singer Paul Nash. The tracks are sounding brilliant, very pleased!

Hossam and I have also just started a new song with singer songwriter Bryony Brooks. She's a real talent...

In addition, I am now half way through mixing my old buddy and ELO colleague Dave Morgan's album which is a real pleasure. It also means I get to go up and work with him in Birmingham and drink rather too much red wine!!

Finally, well known singer songwriter BA Robertson was in last week on a project. It's always a joy to work with him.

Current Garage Studio Projects - David Scott-Morgan, Woody Woodmansey, Hossam Ramzy, Bryony Brooks, Jive Aces

Here's our latest news:

Have started working again with old friend and E.L.O. colleague, David Scott-Morgan, helping him complete his new album. We've already mixed one track which sounds brilliant. It's gonna be a good one. (Here's some background info about Dave that I even get a mention in!)

And that's John Mackinnon, my techie friend, in the middle

I resume work on the Woody Woodmansey and Paul Nash project this week. Woody and son Danny just got back from L.A. where they've been doing some shows. We have legendary keyboard maestro, Gary Sanctuary, sessioning for us!

Working with Hossam Ramzy today on the Universal World Strings Project.

Singer songwriter, Bryony Brooks, coming in later in the week to record her vocals on the third track of her new album. A haunting ballad called 'Where Do We Go From Here'. Lovely stuff.

Just finished Jive Aces new track in time for Valentines Day, it's called 'Tonight You Belong To Me'. Cracking version of the song.

All the best, Martin Smith

E.L.O. Getting the call….

E.L.O. backstage: that's me, third from left and Jeff Lynne's the one wearing sunglasses
I had a phone call a couple of days ago from my old friend and colleague Dave Morgan. I hadn’t heard from him in a while and it was great to catch up. When we said our goodbyes, it put me in mind of another phone call I received from Dave many years ago which (it’s safe to say) changed my life, which was never quite the same again!

The gist of the earlier phone conversation went as follows:

"Hello Mart, Jeff asked me to call you to see if you’d like to join the band".

I went cold and then hot. and then cold again in the space of a nano second!

"What band?" I asked rather timidly. "What band do you think?" said Dave a bit impatiently. "The Electric Light Orchestra, E.L.O."

I think I mumbled something like "That would be great" and "of course I’d love to", and the phone call was over, and my life had changed for ever...

I’d been working with Richard Tandy (keys) and Dave Morgan (Guitar, vocals, Vocoder). They had a separate project going called ‘Tandy Morgan’ which I had been contributing to for some time. Then a local Birmingham charity wanted to use one of Dave’s songs as the theme for the campaign and Dave asked Jeff Lynne to produce it, which he agreed to do. We met one morning in a studio in Birmingham called ‘The Abattoir’ which was owned and run by Birmingham band UB 40. I got on really well with Jeff; we had a great day and made a good record called "Action" for the charity ‘Heartbeat 86’.

And quite soon after that I got the call……

If anybody’s interested in the continuing story I’ll post some more stuff in a while.

All the best, Martin Smith.

Jive Aces, Hossam Ramzy, Jeevan Anandasivam and Woody Woodmansey

9 Jan - I just came back from a very successful writing trip with old friend and colleague Dominic Glynn. We're working on a project called 'For the Fans' which is for Universal Production Music, aimed at getting some usage in this year's London Olympics.

Legendary Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy

I am also getting near completion with another Universal product. This one is with legendary Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy and well known programmer and writer Jeevan Anandasivam which is going to be called 'Middle East Strings' and we're very excited about it.

11 Jan - Had the Jive Aces in on Tuesday and we managed to record sax, ukulele and bagpipes in one session! This lot certainly keep you guessing!

16 Jan - Had a great meeting with Universal on Friday. Getting near completion on the Middle East project. They really like the tracks and there's talk of another project on the back of it.

Woody Woodmansey who played drums for David Bowie

This week starting a new project with old friend and drummer Woody Woodmansey [David Bowie, Art Garfunkel, to name just a couple] with singer Paul Nash. It's a rock project that I've been asked to play guitar on, as well as co-produce and engineer! Oh well, boredom won't be an issue will it?

In the studio with The Jive Aces and Rebecca Grant

left to right: Ian Clarkson, yours truly and Vince Hurley
Hi All,

I was very happy, recently, to welcome world-famous jive and swing specialists ‘The Jive Aces’ to Garage Studio. They are working on two projects simultaneously at the moment, as well as touring extensively in the USA, UK and Europe. While most of the recording is being done at ‘Mad Hatter Studios’ in L.A., I’m helping them out with a few bits here.

One project is a tribute to swing era giant Louis Prima entitled “King of the Swingers”, and the other, a fun and nostalgic view of the Skiffle era by their alter ego “The Jive Aces Skiffle Combo” entitled “It’s Skiffle Time” which, although compared to swing, had a relatively short life, was one of the musical bridges to what became the amazing British music scene of the sixties and beyond.

Rebecca Grant
Earlier this month, I recorded a track with them and well known actress and singer, Rebecca Grant, for the film ‘Chakara’ which she also stars in .The track is a real high energy version of ‘Wild Wild Woman’ with a terrific vocal performance from Rebecca.

These guys are dedicated to their music, but also manage to be an absolute hoot to work with. Check out their website at www.jiveaces.com and YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/jiveaces.

Vinesong Hit the No 1 Spot on NCM

Hi all.

Long-time clients and good friends Vinesong have just achieved a number 1 position in the Christian music charts [NCM]. Both the song ‘Psalm 103’ and the album 'Our God Reigns’ were recorded and mixed at Garage Studio in July of this year, with the music tracks recorded by Keith Hutchinson in South Africa.

We are all totally delighted for them!
